1. Salar de Uyuni salt desert, Bolivia

2. Namib Desert, Namibia

3. Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil

This is a very unusual desert where dunes and lagoons exist together. Due to the amount of rainfall this region receives, ponds of crystal clear water are created on the depressions between the dunes.

The water is prevented from percolating down by a layer of impermeable rock, which lies beneath the sand. The resulting blue, green and black “lagoons” are surrounded by the desert-like sand and reach their fullest between July and September.

4. Pinnacles Desert, Australia

The Pinnacles Desert is located in the Nambung National Park in Western Australia. This has a breathtaking landscape where the weathered rock spires of the Pinnacles rise out of yellow sand dunes.

There is only one access road into the Pinnacles Desert that is 27km long. Visitors should ensure that insurance permits their vehicles to be driven on the unsealed roads. At various turning points off the main access road, beach and picnic areas can be accessed.

This is one of the largest sandy deserts in the world. In January 2008, this desert was covered for the first time in its entirety with a thin layer of snow.

The White Desert is a national park in Egypt and is located near the town of Farafra. The desert centerpiece is its rocks colored from snow-white to cream color.
